Diary of a Songwriter

Monday, 7 p.m.
I really should start writing that new song. I need it for next week’s art show. This time I’m going to write something that’s actually good…like something profound…that people would actually want to listen to. Nay, that I would actually want to listen to.

7:15–Yikes! need to tune my guitar.

7:17–o.k…something NOT bitter this time

7:20–i should get a snack.

7:45–I should call my sister

Thursday, 10:07 p.m.
Shoot, i was going to write a song this week. I better get on that.

10:08 p.m.–hmmmmmm…what should I write about?

10:10–Something funny!

10:05–who am I kidding, I am not the funny-song kind of writer.

10:20–o.k. i’ll just think about it and something brilliant will come to mind.

Sunday, 4 p.m.
so psyched to play my guitar and finally write a song!

4:45p.m.–shoot…fell asleep.

5:00p.m.–what should I write about? I’m not in love (maybe I could pretend?)…I’m kind of pissed off! I’ll write about that! Wait, no, promised myself I wouldn’t write any angry/bitter songs this year. I need something brilliant–thick with metaphor. oooh…or something political! Everyone cool is writing political these days…

5:15–hmmmm…o.k. a new way to dis America… DAMN THE MAN!

 i suck at this.

Monday 8:30 p.m.
shoot. need a song for the art show.  REALLY REALLY gotta get on that.

8:40–o.k. here I go…

8:43–same tune as that other song I wrote.

8:50–too many minor chords

8:52–remember Shelley, songwriting is not your own personal therapy session…

8:53–I wish I was better at picking. then my song would be awesome and everyone would think i was friggin’ brilliant.

8:57–my creative juices are NOT flowing.  I need some chocolate…AND WINE! yes. wine.

9:30–I wonder what I did with that song I started last November. Maybe I could finish that one.

10:00–WHERE IS THAT SONG??????

Wednesday 6:00 p.m.
found it! yes. i’ll finish this one.

6:40 p.m.–o.k. now I remember why I didn’t finish it…Why can’t I think of something for the verses?

6:45–that sounds dumb.

7:10–Ha! I have a tune!! that will work.

7:13–this kind of sounds like a David Gray song. Is it? hmmm.  i’m just going to go with it and hope nobody knows.

7:28–lyrics…what to write for lyrics…

7:30–too rhymey.

7:32–too cheesey

7:34–there I go being bitter again. frig. …better think about it some more.

Thursday, 6:00 p.m.
I really really need to finish this song by tomorrow…I have dinner at 7:00. Shoot. Only an hour. just some lyrics…and a bridge. no big deal.

6:45–Done!! Ha.!!   ….wait…is this a piece of crap? no time to decide….

Friday 5:08 p.m.
damn…I can’t remember how it goes.

5:12–close enough.

5:16–yeah, gotta change that line.

This is so rewarding….I don’t know why I don’t write more.

You are so close to being a loser that it is kind of hot that you aren’t.

    man… you’ve had a rough week.

You should just write a song about writing a song using similar lyrics as above. Who says you can’t be a comic songwriter? A lot of the time you’re a comic blogwriter and it doesn’t have to be that different!

Wow! Great blog! How about an mp3 of the final song? You can write funny blogs, you MUST be able to write funny songs…

You did a great job at Arts Night. I think you were the best of the whole evening.
and I knew you were good to begin with.
